cemented into an evening
never to be redeemed
regardless of Our Fathers.
The stroll down the thoroughfare
and nursed grapes of reason.
A tentative cigarette
unsure of whether
lighting hers
or handing over the fire
is apropos.
Guilt over tossing the butt to the curb.
We both know it's over
but go through the motions.
"I'll call you."
"Drive safe."
Escape can't come fast enough.
Driving away
to the most fitting song
I pat my chest twice
and realize the rub.
I'll never see that sad girl again.
If I do she'll owe me a lighter.
